The Knotted Gun

The Knotted Gun

"Non-Violence" also known as the "Knotted Gun" is a pro-peace sculpture on the grounds of the United Nations by Swedish artist Carl Frederik Reutersward, designed in late 1980 and inspired by the shooting death of his friend John Lennon. It was given to the UN by the government of Luxembourg in 1988.

The sculpture depicts a 45-caliber revolver with its barrel knotted into a bullet blocking twist, an idea normally confined to 2D reality in newspaper editorial cartoons.

There are at least 16 other identical sculptures scattered around the world, in venues ranging from a WWII museum to a shopping center in Liverpool, England. Miniature fiberglas versions are available online.

Edit: Unfortunately the message of the sculpture has not been received by much of the world and especially here in America.

" Where passion pulls follow, never question this, it may be the only chance in your life to be truely alive with the source pulsing through your veins. Even if the journey goes down a futile path, it still is not in vain." From the poem The Art of Art by Adryan Rotica. That poem to me express the creativity and passion of the street artist. This gallery is devoted to the various expressions of art you will find in the cities. Be it grafitti, murals, commissioned or otherwise, and even advertisements on buildings. They are all forms of art you will find in the cities. If an image has the FAA watermark in the lower right hand corner it will NOT appear on any print you purchase.

Imagine - A Tribute To John Lennon

Strawberry Fields is a 2.5-acre landscaped section in New York City's Central Park that is dedicated to the memory of former Beatle John Lennon. It is named after the Beatles' song "Strawberry Fields Forever" written by Lennon.

The Central Park memorial was designed by Bruce Kelly, the chief landscape architect for the Central Park Conservancy. Strawberry Fields was dedicated on what would have been Lennon's 45th birthday, October 9, 1985, by New York Mayor Ed Koch and Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, who had underwritten the project. The entrance to the memorial is located on Central Park West at West 72nd Street, directly across from the Dakota Apartments, where Lennon had lived for the later part of his life, and where he was murdered in 1980. The memorial is a triangular piece of land falling away on the two sides of the park, and its focal point is a circular pathway mosaic of inlaid stones, with a single word, the title of Lennon's famous song: "Imagine". This was a gift from the city of Naples. Along the borders of the area surrounding the mosaic are benches which are endowed in memory of other individuals and maintained by the Central Park Conservancy. Along a path toward the southeast, a plaque on a low glaciated outcropping of schist lists the nations which contributed to building the memorial. Yoko Ono, who still lives in The Dakota, contributed over a million dollars for the landscaping and the upkeep endowment.

Street Art Gallery - Graffiti- Murals- Plus

Graffiti is writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. Stickers and other adhesives are not considered graffiti. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In modern times, paint, particularly spray paint, and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner's consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime. Graffiti may also express underlying social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. Within hip hop culture, graffiti has evolved alongside hip hop music, b-boying, and other elements. Unrelated to hip-hop graffiti, gangs use their own form of graffiti to mark territory or to serve as an indicator of gang-related activities. Controversies that surround graffiti continue to create disagreement amongst city officials/law enforcement and writers who wish to display and appreciate work in public locations. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing art form whose value is highly contested, reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction The murals that are seen throughout the world do not engender the same controversy. For the most part they are requested or commissioned. Many cities such as Philadelphia have an established mural arts program. Also in this gallery I will include advertising and posters which in many cases I consider artistic. Art or vandalism ? You be the judge. You can tell how I feel by how I title the photograph.

About Allen

Images are much more than a simple record. Photography speaks to the best and most generous part of our human nature--the desire to share what we find beautiful and interesting with others. Photography allows us to express ourselves through an art form. We notice a beautiful landscape or a sunset and we want to capture it. Each of us will have a different reason to do so but, essentially, we want to create something. However humdrum our nine-to-five lives may be the creation of an image makes us an artist. Photographs can grab our attention and speak directly to our emotions. Photography at it's best, is a powerful language which speaks to us. It allows us to tell our story and show others our framing of the world around us. And for the photographer who trips the shutter, it feels good. I would be delighted and honored if you chose to hang one of my photos on your wall or use one as a greeting card. Please enjoy your visit and come back often.

Thank You,
Allen Beatty
